A 1905 stereograph of the physical testing laboratory at the Baldwin Locomotive Works shows the workshop where the company checked the metals and materials that went into its engines. By then Baldwin was among the largest locomotive builders in the world, and its Philadelphia plant depended on laboratory testing to confirm that steel and iron could withstand the stresses of boilers, frames, and running gear. Published by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company as a card for a stereoscope, the image gives a close look at the equipment and working conditions of an industrial lab in the early twentieth century.
