This stereograph shows the south aisle of a storeroom at the 16th Street shop of the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, where parts and materials were kept for the company's large-scale locomotive production. Matthias Baldwin founded the firm in 1831, and by the early 1900s it was one of the largest builders of steam locomotives in the world. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued the card around 1905 as a pair of matched photographs meant to be seen through a stereoscope, a popular home entertainment of the period. The image offers a rare look inside an industrial storage space rather than the finished engines.
