Unlike the steam engines usually associated with Baldwin, this stereograph shows an electric locomotive still taking shape in the erecting shop, where its frame and parts were assembled before testing and shipment. Electric haulage was gaining ground in American coal and metal mines in the early 1900s, offering an alternative to mules and steam engines underground. Baldwin, founded in Philadelphia in 1831, was among the largest locomotive builders in the country. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued the card around 1905, and its paired images were meant to be seen through a stereoscope for a sense of depth in the workshop.
