The bolt shop at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia is the focus of this stereograph, a card meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. Baldwin was one of the largest locomotive builders in the United States, and its Philadelphia plant turned out engines for railroads at home and abroad. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, produced and sold stereo views like this one in large numbers around 1905, offering armchair tours of industry, cities and landscapes. The card shows the workshop floor and its machinery, a reminder of how much hand and machine labor went into building each locomotive.
