The shot shows iron locomotive cylinders still sitting in their moulding flasks, the wooden or iron frames that hold the sand mould, at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia. Baldwin, founded in 1831 by Matthias Baldwin, was one of the largest locomotive builders in the United States, and by 1905 its shops turned out engines for railroads across the country. Cylinders were among the heaviest and most exacting castings in that process, so a foundry floor like this one shows the labor and sand-and-iron work that went into each engine before machining. The picture was issued as a stereograph, a paired card meant to be seen through a stereoscope, a popular way to view industrial scenes in the early 1900s.
