The subject here is a punching machine working in the boiler shop of the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, a plant that for much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was one of the largest builders of steam locomotives in the world. Boiler shops were among the loudest and most hazardous areas of a locomotive works, where heavy plates of iron and later steel were cut and pierced with rivet holes before being rolled and joined into boiler shells. This stereograph was issued by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, around 1905, a firm that sold paired views like this one to be seen through a stereoscope as a form of home entertainment and education. Its industrial subject reflects the period's fascination with the machinery that drove American manufacturing.
