Two glass negatives, joined as a panorama, record the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia at the turn of the twentieth century. Founded in 1831 by Matthias Baldwin, the company grew into one of the largest builders of steam locomotives in the world, and its shops were a major employer in the city. The record suggests these may be the left and center sections of a three-part view, so the full shop floor is not visible here. The wide format shows the scale of the works and the way heavy industry filled the city's neighborhoods before 1910. The pictures came from the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued large numbers of views of American cities and industry.
