The Baldwin Locomotive Works, founded in 1831 by Matthias Baldwin, was one of the largest builders of steam locomotives in the world, and its Philadelphia plant employed thousands of workers at the height of the railroad era. This 1910 glass negative shows a group of employees posed outside one of the works' buildings, though the record does not identify which structure it is. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a news photography service that sold pictures to newspapers and magazines. Its title and details come from the original caption cards, which the Library of Congress notes are unverified, so the exact date and setting should be read with that in mind.
