A three-quarter length portrait of Salvatore Spitale, turned slightly to the left, captures its subject in a pose typical of newspaper studio work. Taken on January 30, 1933, it belongs to the New York World-Telegram and the Sun newspaper photograph collection, whose pictures were made to accompany news stories, profiles and feature pieces. The early 1930s were a difficult period in New York, with the Depression deepening and Prohibition still in force, and many of the paper's portraits from those years record the people who made local and national headlines. The record does not say more about Spitale's role, so the picture is best read as a snapshot of the newspaper's working archive from that winter.
