Drawn in ink on paper in 1929, this architectural drawing records the B.F. Keith Memorial theater on Washington Street near Avery Street in Boston, a house named for Benjamin Franklin Keith, the vaudeville impresario. The building arrived as vaudeville was losing ground to motion pictures, and the Keith circuit merged into the new RKO company in 1928, which makes the theater a useful marker of that transition. Its designers were trained to plan audiences, sightlines and stage machinery as carefully as facades, so the drawing rewards a close look at how a single house was meant to hold both live acts and films.
