This ink drawing pairs two Boston theaters in one sheet: the house on Tremont Street, across from the Common, and the B.F. Keith's Vaudeville house on Washington Street. The Tremont Street building began as B.F. Keith's theater and was later known as the Shubert Apollo. Benjamin Franklin Keith built one of the largest vaudeville circuits in the country, and Boston was among its major cities. The drawing dates from 1931, when vaudeville was losing ground to motion pictures, and many of these theaters were designed to show both live acts and films.
