Drawn in ink in 1921, this view shows the Colonial theater on Boylston Street near Tremont Street, directly across from Boston Common. The Colonial had opened in 1900 and became one of the city's leading stages, known for out-of-town tryouts and Boston premieres of Broadway productions. As an architectural record of a 1920s downtown theater, the drawing shows how the building presented itself on a busy corner just as motion pictures were drawing crowds to houses like it.
