Gordon's Olympia theater stood on Washington Street near Boylston Street in Boston, and this ink drawing records it alongside a second Gordon's Olympia at Court Street opposite Hanover Street in Scollay Square. Both were designed for Gordon's, a Boston theater chain that ran motion picture houses through the 1910s and 1920s, and the drawing dates to 1921, when the city's downtown was packed with movie palaces competing for crowds. The record comes from the Library of Congress's American Architectural Drawings collection, which holds plans and elevations of Boston-area buildings from the period. Because such drawings were working documents, they show a building's intended layout and façade rather than its finished appearance.
