The Howard Athenaeum stood on Howard Street near Court Street in Scollay Square, one of Boston's busiest entertainment districts. This 1921 ink drawing is an architectural record of the theater, and its subject headings tie it to the wave of motion picture houses that reshaped downtown Boston in the 1920s. The Howard had been a stage venue since the 1840s and later became known for burlesque, so a drawing of it captures a building that served several generations of audiences. Scollay Square was cleared in the late 1950s and early 1960s to make way for Boston's Government Center, so drawings like this one now document a neighborhood that no longer exists.
