Tremont Street runs along the edge of Boston Common, and this 1928 ink drawing shows the Majestic theater on that busy stretch, one of the city's many playhouses of the period. Architectural drawings like this one were made to show how a building would look from the street, so the facade and entrance are the main focus rather than the interior. By the late 1920s, Boston's theaters were adapting to motion pictures, and the growing number of movie houses reshaped many downtown blocks. The drawing is worth studying for its decorative details and its record of how a theater was presented to the public in that era.
