Few Boston theaters of the late 1920s show the city's stage and screen changing as clearly as this 1928 ink drawing of the Keith-Albee St. James theater on Huntington Avenue near Massachusetts Avenue. The Keith-Albee name ties the building to the vaudeville circuit run by B.F. Keith and E.F. Albee, while the parenthetical note in its title points to a stock company associated with the house. Drawings like this one were made as architectural and engineering records to guide a building's layout, elevations and structure, so the sheet shows the design intentions as well as the finished theater. Its subject headings, which include motion picture theaters, reflect how many large houses of the decade were built to host both live acts and films.
