The drawing shows the Keith Albee New Bijou theater at the corner of Washington and Essex Streets in downtown Boston, a site in the city's busy theater district. The Keith-Albee circuit was one of the largest vaudeville organizations in the country, and during the 1920s its houses increasingly combined live acts with motion pictures as film grew in popularity. Rendered in ink on paper and dated 1927, the sheet is a working architectural drawing, the kind used to plan a building's layout and details before construction. It offers a useful record of how these large downtown playhouses were conceived in the years just before sound film transformed the industry.
