This sheet is unusual because it documents two Boston theaters on one drawing: the Columbia theater at Washington and Castle streets, and the Fenway theater at Massachusetts Avenue and Boylston Street. Both were built during the 1920s, when motion picture houses were multiplying in American cities and owners increasingly favored elaborate interiors and large seating capacities. Drawings like this, rendered in ink on paper, were used by architects, builders, and city officials to plan construction and review proposed designs. The Library of Congress catalogs it among its architectural and engineering drawings, which preserve how these buildings were conceived before they were altered or demolished.
