The Park theater drawing documents a building at the corner of Washington and Boylston streets in downtown Boston, a busy crossing near Park Square. Made in 1929, it is an ink-on-paper architectural drawing, the kind of working document used to plan a building's layout and construction. The decade was a period of heavy theater construction in American cities, as movie houses grew larger and more elaborate, and Boston's downtown theater district saw much of that change. The sheet is worth studying for its clean linework and for what it reveals about how theaters of the period were designed to handle crowds, sightlines and the new demands of motion pictures.
