This ink drawing records a pairing unusual for its time: the Loew's State and the Fine Arts theaters planned together at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Norway Street in Boston. Drawings like this one, catalogued in the Library of Congress's architectural, design and engineering holdings, were working documents that guided construction, so they show the layout, spatial planning and technical intent behind the building rather than its finished appearance. The 1920s were the height of the American movie palace, when chains such as Loew's competed to build large, elaborate houses for the growing audience for films. Studying the plan reveals how a single corner was divided to serve two auditoriums.
