Where most images of Sir William Blackstone are paintings or engravings, this photograph records a sculpted bust of him by Marius Azzi. Blackstone, the English jurist, wrote the *Commentaries on the Laws of England*, published between 1765 and 1769, which became a standard text for lawyers in both England and the American colonies and remained widely read well into the nineteenth century. The print dates to about 1917 and carries a U.S. Copyright Office registration number, which is why a copy was deposited and now sits in the Library's collections. The image is a reminder of how much early American legal training depended on English treatises like his.
