William Henry Harrison appears here full-length, standing in uniform and holding his hat, a pose that presents him as a military commander rather than a politician. Harrison earned his reputation as a general during the War of 1812, most famously at the Battle of the Thames in 1813, and that record carried him to the presidency in 1840 under the "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" campaign. The record gives no artist or publication details, but engravings of this kind were widely circulated in the nineteenth century, when printed portraits of national figures were a common way to make a leader's image familiar to the public. He died in office in April 1841, only a month after his inauguration.
