Shown in left profile, standing beside a horse in full uniform, this subject was photographed at a time when most wartime portraits were tighter head-and-shoulders studies. The record dates the image to February 1864, placing it in the middle of the war, and it is catalogued in the Library of Congress's Civil War Photograph Collection. Portraits that included a horse were popular because they suggested mounted service and a soldier's pride in his equipment, and a good horse was a valued possession. The uniform and the posed setting are worth studying for what they reveal about how men of the period chose to be remembered.
