Neith Boyce Hapgood, who went on to write novels and plays and became part of the lively bohemian circle of early twentieth-century New York, sits for this portrait in left profile. Frances Benjamin Johnston made the image as a cyanotype, a light-sensitive process that produces the deep blue tones seen here. Posed in an ornamental costume and holding up roses, the sitter appears in the decorative, theatrical manner favored by portrait photographers of the 1890s and 1900s. The print is worth studying for how Johnston combined a formal, staged elegance with the individuality of a sitter who was then building her own literary career.
