Few rivers in the national park are as closely tied to its thermal activity as the Fire Hole, which runs through the geyser basins and carries warm runoff from springs and geysers along its course. This stereograph card, published in Philadelphia by George W. Griffith around 1902, would have been viewed through a stereoscope to give the scene depth. Such cards were a popular way for people far from the West to "visit" Yellowstone, which had been set aside as the first national park in 1872. Its subject headings also point to the park's geysers, a reminder of how central those features were to its appeal.
