The Upper Geyser Basin on the Fire Hole River, in what was then Wyoming Territory, is the setting here, and the 1871 date places the view just before Yellowstone became the first national park in 1872. Surveys of the region were under way in those years, and photographers and painters accompanying them recorded the thermal features, geysers and hot springs that drew early attention to the area. Old Faithful, the best-known geyser in the basin, is part of this landscape, so the scene offers a glimpse of ground that was still little known to most Americans at the time. Look for the steam, the mineral-stained terraces and the open, unsettled character of the valley.
