The Upper Geyser Basin along the Fire Hole River is the setting here, and in 1871 it was still largely unknown to the American public. The Hayden Geological Survey, led by Ferdinand V. Hayden, was then documenting the geysers and hot springs of what was still Wyoming Territory, and its surveys produced some of the first detailed scientific and visual records of the area. Congress created Yellowstone as the nation's first national park in 1872, and accounts like these, including the basin's famous geysers such as Old Faithful, helped build the case for protecting the land.
