Yellowstone's stagecoaches were a fixture of the park's early tourist years, and this view pairs a six-horse coach with the rugged Eagle Nest Crag and the Gardiner River. Yellowstone became the first national park in 1872, and for decades the only practical way for most visitors to reach its geysers and canyons was by coach from the railhead at Gardiner, Montana, which sits at the park's northern entrance. Coaching parties of this kind, with teams pulling heavy loads over rough mountain roads, were central to how the park was experienced and promoted. The river and crag in the background show the dramatic terrain that drew these travelers north of the Gardiner gateway.
