The six-horse team and the passengers seated on the roof set this coach apart from the smaller stagecoaches of the same era. Yellowstone's tour coaches were built larger and heavier than standard Western stagecoaches, because they carried visitors over rough mountain roads on multiday loops through the park. Before automobiles took over the park roads in the 1910s, these coaches were the main way most tourists saw the geysers and canyons. Look at the harnessing and the crowded upper deck to see how much load a team like this was expected to pull.
