Where the Gardiner River cuts a narrow gorge between the town of Gardiner and Mammoth Hot Springs, Eagle Nest Crag rises above the road that links the park's northern entrance to its best-known thermal terraces. Travelers making that approach by stagecoach or wagon would have passed beneath these steep walls before reaching the hotels at Mammoth. Gardiner grew up as the railroad town serving that entrance, so the canyon was often visitors' first close look at the park's rugged scenery. Views like this one were widely reproduced to show people back home what Yellowstone looked like.
