The Golden Gate is a narrow limestone passage on the road out of Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, and this view looks west through it toward the stream-cut terraces below. The gap was carved by a small creek, and travelers in horse-drawn stages had to negotiate its steep grade and tight curves. Mammoth Hot Springs grew up as the park's administrative center and a stop for tourists, and the hotel nearby drew visitors who came to see the travertine terraces and the constantly shifting springs. Yellowstone became the first national park in 1872, which is why scenes like this were prized as proof of the country's natural wonders.
