Captain James McQueen Forsyth is the subject of this portrait, though the original caption misspells his name as "Forsythe." He commanded the USS Baltimore, a steel protected cruiser commissioned in 1890 that served the U.S. Navy through the years around the turn of the century. The picture was made in 1900 on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate, a large format that gave photographers fine detail. Formal portraits of ship captains like this one were often made for service records, newspapers and public occasions.
