Few details of this crew portrait survive beyond the ship's name: the sailors of the U.S.S. Baltimore, a steel protected cruiser the Navy commissioned in 1890. The Detroit Publishing Company made the picture on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, and its catalog places it between 1890 and 1901, the years the ship was in service. Group portraits like this one were common in the era, when a ship's company often posed together on deck to mark a cruise or a homecoming. Viewers can still see the uniforms and the crowded arrangement of the men, which record the working life of an American warship at the turn of the century.
