This portrait shows Rear Admiral John Crittenden Watson, photographed aboard or in connection with the U.S.S. Baltimore around 1900. Watson (1842-1923) was a career naval officer whose service spanned the Civil War and the modernization of the American fleet. The Baltimore was a steel protected cruiser commissioned in the late 1880s, when the Navy was replacing its wooden ships with steel vessels. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its large-format views of American places and people, issued this image from a glass plate negative.
