The sitter was chief engineer of the cruiser USS Baltimore, and the record names the ship directly. Commissioned in 1890, the steel protected cruiser served on the Asiatic Station, and in 1900 it took part in operations in northern China during the Boxer Rebellion. Chief engineers kept the boilers and engines running, a demanding job carried out below deck, far from the attention given to the ship's officers on the bridge. The picture is one of the 8 by 10 inch glass negatives made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American people and places around 1900.
