Baltimore's City Hall, preserved here on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, anchors the municipal core of a city that was among the largest in the country in the early 1900s. Designed by Edmund G. Lind and completed in the 1870s, the building combines French Second Empire styling with a tall central dome, a look that expressed civic pride in the decades after the Civil War. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many views for railroad and travel promotion, made this negative sometime between 1900 and 1910. Its large glass plate records fine detail in the stonework and facade.
