A bird's-eye chromolithograph titled "View of Washington City," printed by E. Sachse & Co. of Baltimore and published by J.F. Walker around 1869, presents the capital from a high vantage point that lets the viewer take in the whole layout at once. The record ties the print to the United States Capitol, which dominates the scene and was still being completed in these years, with its new cast-iron dome rising above the city. Sachse's firm specialized in detailed aerial views of American cities during the 1850s through the 1870s, and their color lithographs were prized as both maps and decorative wall pieces. Look closely at the streets, parks and avenues radiating from the Capitol to see how the planners' grand design looked on paper just after the Civil War.
