This 1838 steel engraving shows a stone viaduct on the Baltimore and Washington Railroad, one of the earliest lines to link two major American cities directly. The route opened in 1835 and ran roughly 40 miles between Baltimore and the national capital. Masonry viaducts like this one carried track over valleys and waterways, and engravers often showed them to demonstrate that the new technology could cross difficult ground. The fine line work of steel engraving captures the arches and surrounding landscape in detail.
