Few places were more central to the early American railroad than the Baltimore and Ohio's shops at Mount Clare, the works shown here. Located in southwest Baltimore, the complex built and repaired locomotives and cars from the 1830s onward and grew into one of the country's most important railroad machine shops. The record dates the print to 1871 and credits Cushings & Bailey and Hagadorn Brothers as photographers, though those attributions are unverified. It also lists West Virginia as the location, which appears to be a cataloging error, since Mount Clare is in Baltimore.
