A Grand National Whig prize banner badge, lithographed by Edward Weber & Co. of Baltimore, is a campaign piece with a clear local connection. The Whig National Convention met in Baltimore in May 1844 and nominated Henry Clay for president, and the city's printers produced banners and badges like this one during the contest against James K. Polk. This impression is a chine collé proof, with the image printed on thin paper and laid onto a heavier sheet, a finish that shows fine lines in the design. Its copyright entry names William Curlett and John Gade.
