Camp Casey, a Union encampment near Bladensburg, Maryland, shows the defensive ring of troops that formed around Washington in the first months of the Civil War, when the capital was exposed and the Union army was still raising and drilling its volunteers. The lithograph was issued by E. Sachse & Co., a Baltimore firm that produced many color views of military camps and public sites for a wartime public eager to see where its soldiers were stationed. Prints like this one, made within a year of the war's start, are useful records of how the Union army laid out its camps and how it wanted those camps portrayed at home.
