Looking north over Baltimore from Federal Hill, this stereograph offers a wide view of the city's rooftops, church spires and streets fanning out toward the harbor's edge. Federal Hill, the rise south of the Inner Harbor, was a common vantage point for photographers in the nineteenth century, when stereo cards were a popular way to bring distant places into the parlor. The card is attributed to W.M. Chase, though its date is not recorded, so its exact moment remains uncertain. Viewed through a stereoscope, the pair of images would have given the city a sense of depth and street-level detail.
