A two-humped Bactrian camel is the subject here, shown at Druid Hill Park in Baltimore, a large public park where the city kept animals for visitors to see. The picture dates to about 1906 and survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, the large-format type photographers often used for detailed city views and picture postcards. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many scenes of American cities and landscapes, made the image, and its thick coat and park setting offer a glimpse of early zoo life in Baltimore.
