Few Baltimore pictures from the 1860s show a German-American leisure ground as directly as this one does. The Schuetzen-Park on Belair Road was a shooting ground named for the *Schützen*, the marksmen's clubs that were central to social life among German immigrants in nineteenth-century American cities. Such parks combined target shooting with picnics, music, and beer gardens, serving as gathering places for families as well as members. The print is credited on the shelflist card to E. Sachse & Co., a Baltimore firm active in city views and lithography at the time, and the copyright deposit date of 1867 suggests the image was issued that year. The catalog notes that the dating is unverified, so the year should be read as approximate.
