This stereograph looks southeast over Baltimore Street and Hopkins Place, the corner where the Great Baltimore Fire began on February 7, 1904. The blaze spread through the downtown commercial district over roughly 30 hours, and firefighters from other cities were called in by rail. Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for mass-produced stereo views, issued the card, so it was likely made for home viewers to see the damage in three dimensions. The caption card lists the subject under fires and geography, so the scene is best read as a record of the ruined streetscape.
