This view captures a single building, the Hurst Building, about 25 minutes after the fire alarm, while the blaze was still spreading rather than after the damage was done. The Great Baltimore Fire began in early February 1904 and burned much of the city's downtown business district over roughly a day, destroying more than 1,500 buildings. The March 19 date on the caption card does not match that event, so it should be treated as unverified.
