This view shows the Sun building at South and Baltimore streets, one of the downtown landmarks the fire of February 1904 threatened as it swept through the city's commercial core. The blaze, which broke out in a dry goods district on February 7 and burned for roughly a day and a half, destroyed much of central Baltimore, and the photograph records the damaged streetscape in the days that followed. It was made by the National Photo Company, a firm that documented Baltimore and Washington street scenes on glass negatives in the early twentieth century. Its surface shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging glass plates.
