Downtown at the corner of Baltimore and Liberty Streets, this glass negative records the ruins of the Great Baltimore Fire, which broke out in February 1904. The blaze started on a Sunday and burned for about a day and a half, destroying more than 1,500 buildings in the city's commercial core, and firefighters came by rail from other cities to help. The National Photo Company, which documented American cities in the early twentieth century, sent photographers to record the damage. Look for the streaks and mottling across the glass, which come from deterioration of the original coating rather than from the scene itself.
