Washington Engine No. 6 is shown in action during the Great Baltimore Fire of February 1904, which swept through much of the city's downtown over roughly two days. Fire companies from Washington and other cities were brought in by rail to support Baltimore's overwhelmed crews, and this glass negative records one of those steam engines at work. The National Photo Company made the image, and the faint streaks across the glass come from deterioration in the original coating, not from the scene itself.
