Firefighters from Washington, D.C., appear here as their No. 3 company goes into action during the Baltimore fire of 1904. The fire broke out on February 7 and burned through much of the city's downtown over the following day, destroying roughly 1,500 buildings. Fire companies from Washington and other cities were sent by rail to help local crews, and the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented events and places across the country, recorded the scene on glass negatives. The streaks and blemishes visible on this glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating, and they add to the picture's character as a record of the day.
